Jayarama Chalasani - NIT Nagpur - BSES CEO

Anyone who is sceptical about the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani [ Images ] Group's ability to execute the projects it has on hand, and there are many, would do well to meet the man Ambani has hired to do this.
The slimly-built 51-year old Jayarama Chalasani, began his career at the state-owned power-generating giant NTPC after having got an engineering degree from the Regional Engineering College in Nagpur two decades ago. He was involved in the setting up of one of NTPC's first plants from scratch, at Ramagundam. His work must have impressed his boss RV Shahi so much that, in 1990, he was moved to the southern headquarters as manager (planning) and asked to develop other power projects at Mangalore, Kakinada and Kayamkulam - when Shahi became power secretary and Delhi's [ Images ] power distribution was privatised, he was fond of saying the heads of both companies (Chalasani at BSES and Anil Sardana at the Tata's NDPL) were both his 'boys'.
A few years later, when Rajinder Singh became NTPC chief in 1992, Chalasani was brought in as his executive assistant - Chalasani quit to join Reliance in 1995.
Perhaps this is why Chalasani is confident that, by 2015, Reliance Energy [ Get Quote ] will be the country's second-largest power producer, after NTPC - Reliance Energy's first 600 Mw will come up this year at Rosa and by 2015, the group which has 33,000 Mw of projects with it (all acquired under Chalasani's watch) will have commissioned 15,000 Mw.
Other projects which he bid for, and won, for ADAG include the Mumbai [ Images ] Metro, the Hyderabad Trade Tower and five road projects at NHAI.
At Reliance (then undivided), Chalasani worked on power projects like Bawana, Jamnagar and Hirma (all suffered the same fate as other private power plants in those days) and, in 2002, he moved to BSES which had, by then, been acquired by the Ambanis.
He worked on the Delhi electricity privatisation (he still insists the concessions that BSES and NDPL received were essential to make the privatisation work) - Sardana was supposed to head BSES's Delhi operations but resigned to join NDPL, and Chalasani took charge for just a while.
Though he admits ultimate responsibility, this is why he can avoid giving direct answers as to why BSES' Delhi operations are such a mess or on why their licence shouldn't be revoked and given to NDPL (a few days ago, the Delhi regulator served notice to one of the BSES companies asking precisely this).
But Chalasani's in the news for different reasons these days. He held a press conference picking holes in the Directorate General of Hydrocarbon's defence of Reliance Industries [ Get Quote ] Limited's capital expenditure in the Krishna Godavari Basin - he gave proof that the two 'independent' experts the DGH had cited were both linked with RIL.
While the tip-off in this case came from another ADAG functionary, the groundwork for most of what the ADAG group has alleged against RIL and the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has been Chalasani's - this includes documenting the change in the MoPNG's stance over the years, analysing the 'flaws' in RIL's bid which threw up the $4.20 per mmbtu price, the impact of RIL's increased capex on fertiliser/other subsidies and how this will impact both its profits as well as those of the government.
When RIL unilaterally changed some clauses in the RIL-RNRL agreement to suit it, as RNRL claims, Chalasani was Anil Ambani's [ Images ] director on RNRL. All of this makes him the group's walking encyclopaedia on the matter.
Which is why, when he accompanied his daughter who was joining Stanford for an MBA last year, the group insisted he answer journalists' queries from there while asking his office in Mumbai to pass on the necessary papers.
With the case hotting up, though, it's unlikely he will be allowed the same liberty when his son who, having finished his engineering from Vellore, is all set to go to for an MS at the University of Southern California.
Understated to a fault, Chalasani who was on NTPC's cricket team, refuses to say if he was a spinner, possibly conscious of the spin journalists will give to this.

HRD Ministry changes NIT admission process

MUMBAI: Out-of-state students will no longer be admitted to the country's 20 prestigious National Institutes of Technology (NITs) on the basis of their state rank in the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE). From the 2008-09 academic year, the out-of-state students will be admitted based on their national ranks. The Central government has just discovered that the admission process to some of India's finest engineering colleges has been flawed all these years, with students having lower marks getting a chance to study instead of their meritorious peers. To rectify this, the HRD ministry has decided to alter the admission process for the NITs. Since 2002, the HRD ministry has been upgrading Regional Engineering Colleges to NITs on the lines of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) to provide quality technical education. The government passed the NIT Act in 2007 and all these colleges were declared institutes of national importance. Fifty per cent of NIT seats are reserved for students of the particular state where the institute is located. The remaining seats were till now reserved for students hailing from other states and Union Territories according to the population of that state. A specific number of seats were reserved for each state, whose students were admitted according to their state AIEEE rank.

Mr. K. V. Kamath - NIT Surathkal 1969 Batch

Mr. K. V. Kamath, Managing Director and CEO, ICICI Bank Limited

Mr. K. Vaman Kamath is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of ICICI Bank Limited. ICICI Bank (NYSE: IC) functions as a universal bank through itself and its associate companies in the areas of corporate finance, commercial banking, investment banking, asset management, non-banking finance, investor services, broking and insurance.

Mr. Kamath started his career in 1971 at ICICI- the parent organisation of ICICI Bank, he has worked ceaselessly to stretch the borders of ICICI's businesses to evolve it into a modern, savvy and technology enabled financial organisation catering to almost all the financial needs of corporate and retail customers.

Mr. Kamath was born on December 2, 1947, in Mangalore, Karnataka where he spent most of his early years. After completing Higher Secondary and Pre-University from St. Aloysius, he joined the Karnataka Regional Educational College (KREC) for a Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering. After graduating from KREC in 1969, he joined the prestigious Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) for a Masters Degree in Business Administration. The two-year curriculum at IIMA served as a valuable input in the process of his development as a manager and future business leader.

After graduating from IIMA in 1971, Mr. Kamath started his career with ICICI in the Project Finance division and moved on to different departments to gather a rich and varied experience which included setting up of new businesses such as leasing, venture capital, credit rating as well as handling general management positions. As part of his general management responsibilities he initiated and implemented ICICI's computerisation programme. Substantial investments in technology right from the early years have resulted in systems that are today a competitive advantage for ICICI.

In 1988, Mr. Kamath joined the Asian Development Bank, Manila in their Private Sector Department. His principal work experience at ADB was in various projects in China, India, Indonesia, Philippines, Bangladesh and Vietnam. He was the ADB representative on the Boards of several companies and this experience offered him considerable insight into the working of global firms.

During his years in South East Asia, Mr. Kamath worked in most of the developing countries in the region including China, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam and this provided a rich experience in terms of exposure to a variety of business situations many of them typical to emerging markets.

In May 1996, Mr. Kamath returned to ICICI as its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer. The strategic initiatives and structural changes subsequently instituted by him across the ICICI Group have helped ICICI to re-draw its boundaries and increase its business potential.

A firm believer in the concept of Universal Banking - the ability to provide complete financial services to different classes of customers - Mr. Kamath has been instrumental in expanding the Group's services to the retail customers. Under him, ICICI has made significant progress in creating a strong retail focus and building the personal financial services business. The most critical driver in the personal financial services business is the customer and ICICI has made substantial efforts to strengthen its relationship with the customer enabling it to build a strong retail franchise with about five million retail customer accounts, five million bond holders and an established market presence.

Mr. Kamath believes that the foremost ingredient for ICICI Group's success has been the ability to continuously evolve both organisational structure and product offerings, thereby remaining on the cutting edge of financial services. The robust growth achieved during a period otherwise marked by modest economic growth, has been entirely on account of capitalising on market opportunities, which enabled ICICI to re-write the boundaries of its business. Looking back to the changes in the environment, he believes that financial, human, technology and speed capital, would drive the financial services sector in the future and draw the boundaries for achieving leadership. His strategy has therefore revolved around augmenting these Capitals.

Often on the trail of deregulation, there is a significant amount of merger and acquisition activity as industry uses the opportunity to extract locked values in the system. Mr Kamath initiated this process of consolidation in the Indian financial sector through a series of acquisitions of non-banking finance companies in 1996-98. With the acquisition of a private bank in March 2001 and the recent merger between ICICI Limited and ICICI Bank, Mr. Kamath has achieved the objective of creating the first universal bank in India.

Mr. Kamath presently resides in Mumbai and is married and has a son and a daughter. He is an avid reader and has lectured extensively both in India and abroad. Mr. Kamath is a Member of the Governing Board on various educational institutions including the Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad, Indian School of Business, National Institute of Bank Management and Manipal Academy of Higher Education. Mr. Kamath is also a Member of the National Council of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). The Asian Banker Journal of Singapore had voted Mr. Kamath as the most e-savvy CEO amongst Asian banks. Recently, the Mumbai Management Association conferred him with the Finance Man of the Year award and the World HRD Congress in its Mumbai session in November 2000, voted Mr. Kamath as the best CEO for Innovative HR practices.

Mr.. Kamath was recently awarded the Asian Business Leader of the Year at the Asian Business Leader Award 2001, organized by the business television network CNBC Asia Pacific and the leading business logistics Solutions Company TNT.

Bailochan Behera- electrical engineering from the REC, Rourkela,

It's payback time for Oriya NRI Bailochan Behera, who has opened the Indian arm here of a $7-million (Rs.300 million) IT company he owns in the US.
"I have always had an emotional attachment for Orissa and I cannot forget what the state has done for all of us. For example, free education is just one of the many benefits we received," Behera told IANS in an e-mail interview.
Behera's Systems Technology International Inc (STI), which he started in 1996, is running its Indian offshore development centre out of an 8,000-sq ft facility. The centre, which employs 60 people, is the company's third worldwide and its first in India.
The company employs 100 professionals at its headquarters at Novi in Michigan and in Georgetown, Guyana.
Born in Keonjhar, Behera has a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the Regional Engineering College, Rourkela, and a master's degree in computer engineering from Michigan's Wayne State University.
Behera, who left Orissa 25 years ago, is settled in the Detroit suburb of Farmington Hills in Michigan. He is married and has two children.
"I always had the sincere desire to contribute to the progress and development of my home state. Apart from this, I feel that Orissa is suitable for starting a company from a business point of view also," he said.
"For example, the cost of doing business in Bhubaneswar is far lower, compared to cities like Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai or Delhi. This creates a very good competitive advantage for businesses in Orissa," he maintained.
According to him, overseas Oriyas "can make a difference in the development of the state by providing a momentum to the local economy.
"However, a lot of them are still sceptical about the business conditions in the state and are afraid of taking risks," Behera maintained.
"I personally feel that helping people by donating money is only a temporary solution and only makes them further dependent. By making people financially independent by providing jobs, we would be helping them in the long term.
"Creating well-paying professional jobs improves the economy, which will in turn contribute to the overall development of the state," Behara said.
STI provides professional services in the areas of IT, engineering and web development. Its most recent accomplishment has been the development of stiPASS, a Personnel Acquisition Software System that helps in automating the recruitment and hiring process.
